A hydropedological approach to a mountainous Clayey Humic Dystrudept in the Mantiqueira Range, southeastern Brazil Scientia Agricola
Pinto,Leandro Campos; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Poggere,Giovana Clarice; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT: The Mantiqueira Range region is one of the most important headwaters in southeastern Brazil. In this context, the relationship between pedology and hydrology has been debated and analyzed in recent years, contributing to the creation of a multidisciplinary science call hydropedology. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the hydropedological properties of a mountainous Clayey Humic Dystrudept in the Mantiqueira Range region, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, comparing two land-uses, native forest and pasture. The hydraulic conductivity results demonstrated that native forest (MFO) has a strong influence on this parameter, offering conditions for movement of water in the soil that are more adequate in this profile than in pasture....

Adsorption and availability of phosphorus in response to humic acid rates in soils limed with CaCO3 or MgCO3 Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Maluf,Henrique José Guimarães Moreira; Silva,Carlos Alberto; Curi,Nilton; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Rosa,Sara Dantas.
ABSTRACT Humic acid (HA) may reduce adsorption and increase soil P availability, however, the magnitude of this effect is different when Ca2+ prevails over Mg2+ in limed soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of HA rates and carbonate sources on the adsorption, phosphate maximum buffering capacity (PMBC), and P availability in two contrasting soils. Oxisol and Entisol samples were firstly incubated with the following HA rates: 0, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg kg-1, combined with CaCO3 or MgCO3, to evaluate P adsorption. In sequence, soil samples were newly incubated with P (400 mg kg-1) to evaluate P availability. The least P adsorption was found when 296 mg kg-1 of HA was added to Oxisol. Applying HA rates decreased maximum...

Aggregate stability in soils cultivated with eucalyptus PAB
Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Curi,Nilton; Oliveira,Anna Hoffmann; Silva,Mayesse Aparecida da.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the aggregate stability of tropical soils under eucalyptus plantation and native vegetation, and assess the relationships between aggregate stability and some soil chemical and physical properties. Argisols, Cambisol, Latosols and Plinthosol within three eucalyptus-cultivated regions, in the states of Espírito Santo, Rio Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais, Brazil, were studied. For each region, soils under native vegetation were compared to those under minimum tillage with eucalyptus cultivation. The aggregate stability was measured using the high-energy moisture characteristic (HEMC) technique, i.e., the moisture release curve at very low suctions. This method compares the resistance of aggregates to slaking on a...

Development, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of LASH model Scientia Agricola
Beskow,Samuel; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Norton,Lloyd Darrell.
Many hydrologic models have been developed to help manage natural resources all over the world. Nevertheless, most models have presented a high complexity regarding data base requirements, as well as, many calibration parameters. This has brought serious difficulties for applying them in watersheds where there is scarcity of data. The development of the Lavras Simulation of Hydrology (LASH) in a GIS framework is described in this study, which focuses on its main components, parameters, and capabilities. Coupled with LASH, sensitivity analysis, parameter range reduction, and uncertainty analysis were performed prior to the calibration effort by using specific techniques (Morris method, Monte Carlo simulation and a Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty...

Land-use effect on hydropedology in a mountainous region of Southeastern Brazil Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Pinto,Leandro Campos; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Taveira,Luís Renato Silva; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT In Brazil, the Mantiqueira Range, southeastern region, shelters the last remnants of the ecologically important Upper Montane Tropical Forest. since extensive exploration that has been taking place in this biome for decades, the influence of land-use changes on hydropedology in these areas must be investigated once major land-use changes have been observed. This study aims to evaluate the land-use influence on soil drainable porosity (SDP) in a headwater watershed located in the Mantiqueira Range region, and to validate the proposed methods based on micromorphological and hydrological indicators. The native vegetation of the study area is Atlantic forest that occupies 62% of the area, and the remaining 38% has been used for pasture. Thirty nine...

Long-term phosphate fertilization, mycorrhizal inoculation and historical land use influence on soybean growth and P uptake Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Motta,Paulo Emílio Ferreira da; Siqueira,José Oswaldo; Ribeiro,Bruno Teixeira; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Phosphorus is a key-nutrient in the fertility management of highly weathered tropical soils. So, this work was carried out with the objective of evaluating the influence of the interaction between P doses, mycorrhizal inoculation and historical land use on soybean growth and P uptake in five Latosols (Oxisols) with contrasting chemical, physical and mineralogical properties under a continuous long-term phosphate fertilization (more than 15 years). The plants were cultivated in 4.5L-plastic pots containing 4 kg of soil in a completely randomized design, four replications and 2x2x2 factorial scheme with two P doses; and with or without mycorrhizal inoculation; and soils cultivated for long periods and non-cultivated (under native vegetation). There...

MICROMORPHOLOGY AND PEDOGENESIS OF MOUNTAINOUS INCEPTISOLS IN THE MANTIQUEIRA RANGE (MG) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Pinto,Leandro Campos; Zinn,Yuri Lopes; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Owens,Phillip Ray; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACTUnderstanding soil formation processes across different landscapes is needed to predict how soil properties will respond to land use change. This study aimed to characterize mountainous Inceptisols (Cambisols) under high altitude subtropical climate in southeastern Brazil, by soil physical, chemical and micromorphological analyses, under native forest and pasture. The soil under pasture had a greater bulk density than under forest, resulting in a severe reduction of macroporosity. At two depths, coarse quartz grains are angular, suggesting absence of transportational processes, thus confirming an autochthonous pedogenesis from the underlying gneissic rock. Most feldspars were weathered beyond recognition, but mineral alteration was commonly seen...

Rainfall erosivity and rainfall return period in the experimental watershed of Aracruz, in the coastal plain of Espirito Santo, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Martins,Sérgio Gualberto; Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Curi,Nilton; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Fonseca,Sebastião.
Knowledge on the factors influencing water erosion is fundamental for the choice of the best land use practices. Rainfall, expressed by rainfall erosivity, is one of the most important factors of water erosion. The objective of this study was to determine rainfall erosivity and the return period of rainfall in the Coastal Plains region, near Aracruz, a town in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, based on available data. Rainfall erosivity was calculated based on historic rainfall data, collected from January 1998 to July 2004 at 5 min intervals, by automatic weather stations of the Aracruz Cellulose S.A company. A linear regression with individual rainfall and erosivity data was fit to obtain an equation that allowed data extrapolation to calculate...

Sea surface temperature (SST) and rainfall erosivity in the Upper Grande River Basin, southeast Brazil Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Curi,Nilton; Yanagi,Silvia Nazaré Monteiro.
Relationships between regional climates and oceanic and atmospheric anomalies are important in understanding the rainfall regime of a given region. This work aimed to analyze rainfall erosivity in the Upper Grande River Basin, Southern Minas Gerais State, Brazil; namely the two most representative environments, the Mantiqueira Range (MR) and the Plateau of Campos das Vertentes (PCV). These areas can be affected by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomena, which can be evaluated by indicators such as Sea Surface Temperature (SST) for the Niño 3.4 Region. Rainfall erosivity was calculated for individual rainfall events from January, 2006 to December, 2010. Pearson's coefficient of correlation was used to evaluate the relationships between rainfall...

Spatial distribution of water erosion risk in a watershed with eucalyptus and Atlantic Forest Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Curi,Nilton; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Beskow,Samuel; Martins,Sérgio Gualberto.
The process of water erosion occurs in watersheds throughout the world and it is strongly affected by anthropogenic influences. Thus, the knowledge of these processes is extremely necessary for planning of conservation efforts. This study was performed in an experimental forested watershed in order to predict the average potential annual soil loss by water erosion using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and a Geographic Information System (GIS), and then compared with soil loss tolerance. All the USLE factors were generated in a distributed approach employing a GIS tool. The layers were multiplied in the GIS framework in order to predict soil erosion rates. Results showed that the average soil loss was 6.2 Mg ha-1 yr-1. Relative to soil loss...

Water erosion risk prediction in eucalyptus plantations Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Mayesse Aparecida da; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Curi,Nilton; Oliveira,Anna Hoffmann; Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Norton,Lloyd Darrell.
Eucalyptus plantations are normally found in vulnerable ecosystems such as steep slope, soil with low natural fertility and lands that were degraded by agriculture. The objective of this study was to obtain Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) factors and use them to estimate water erosion risk in regions with eucalyptus planted. The USLE factors were obtained in field plots under natural rainfall in the Rio Doce Basin, MG, Brazil, and the model applied to assess erosion risk using USLE in a Geographic Information System. The study area showed rainfall-runoff erosivity values from 10,721 to 10,642 MJ mm ha-1 h-1 yr-1. Some soils (Latosols) had very low erodibility values (2.0 x 10-4 and 1.0 x 10-4t h MJ-1 mm-1), the topographic factor ranged from 0.03 to...
